If you are expecting a tax refund, you’ll get your money faster when you e-file. It will arrive even more quickly if you select direct depost—sometimes in as little as 10 days! You’ll save a bit of money by doing your own taxes, especially if you do not have complicated forms. All 1099, W-2 forms and others are required to be postmarked by 1/31. That means you’ll have everything you need to file your taxes, if you don’t already!
You can purchase tax software, download free tools and e-file your taxes on a number of sites. My favorite is TaxACT® because it is completely FREE to e-file your federal taxes. There are no restrictions and no catch—I’ve used this for years at home! You can also file your state taxes with the same program, but there is a fee to e-file those. I believe I paid $11.95 last year, thought I think it varies by state. Even their ultimate package (which includes state filing) is only $17.95.
Why do I use TaxACT® year after year? They’re secure site stores my basic information for the following year. It keeps things like address, job and family members. When I’m ready to file this year, I won’t have to dig out my children’s social security cards! It is very easy to update your information if you have had changes since 2009 but it’s great to have it all completed if you haven’t. Even if you did not use them last year, you may be able to import all your information from last year’s PDF files.

They also work to be sure there is nothing you’ve missed to save even more! You can comb through each of the alerts before you file, as they will highlight any red flags.
